The map
Mahāsamund is the headquarters of Mahasamund district in Chhattisgarh, east of Raipur, on the broad plain drained by the Mahanadi River. From above, it is a medium-sized town with an irregular centre, a railway line crossing the built area, and many ponds, or talabs, scattered between the neighbourhoods. The land around it is dominated by rice paddies, a signature of central India's farming belt.
The district contains Sirpur, an important archaeological site on the Mahanadi known for its brick Laxman Temple and the remains of Buddhist monasteries. The town itself is more modest. It is an administrative and market centre for the surrounding villages, with streets that have grown outward from the old core along the main roads.
A Mahāsamund map poster shows a town where water and streets sit side by side. The ponds appear as small, rounded shapes amid the fine texture of residential lanes, and the railway adds a single confident line. It is an understated map with more detail than you might expect.

A railway crosses the town and cuts a long, straight line through the built area. It contrasts with the winding lanes of the older centre.
Around the town, flat rice fields and village roads stretch in every direction. This gives the map a quiet, open setting.
