The map

About this Malakanagiri map poster

Malakanagiri, often written Malkangiri, is the headquarters of the southernmost district of Odisha, close to the borders with Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh. The town is small and loosely laid out, with a main road, a market area and government buildings, and its streets give way quickly to countryside. On the map it appears as a modest cluster within a large, green landscape.

Water shapes the district. The Sileru and Saberi rivers mark much of its boundary, and the Balimela reservoir, created by a dam on the Sileru, spreads its branching shoreline across the land. Between them lie forested hills and valleys, with villages linked by long, winding roads, so the wider map reads as irregular and organic rather than gridded.

The hills of the district are home to several Adivasi communities, among them the Bonda and Koya peoples. A Malakanagiri map poster focuses on the town itself but keeps a sense of that setting: a small network of streets held within rivers, reservoir and forest.

01

District headquarters

Main roads, market and administrative buildings form the centre of town, a compact area whose streets loosen as they head into the countryside.

02

Reservoir shorelines

The Balimela reservoir spreads through the district with a long, branching edge, one of the most striking water shapes in southern Odisha.

03

Winding hill roads

Roads leave town in long curves through forest and valley, following the terrain rather than any grid.
