The map

About this Malappuram map poster

Malappuram is the headquarters of the district of the same name in northern Kerala. The name is usually explained as meaning a place on the hills, and the map supports it. The town spreads over low laterite hills and valleys, and its roads curve around the slopes instead of forming a grid. Houses sit among trees, so the built-up area looks scattered from above.

The Kadalundi River flows through the town and gives the map its main natural line. Kottakkunnu, a hill near the centre, has been turned into a park and viewpoint. On the Malappuram map poster the river, the hills and the winding roads form a pattern that is typical of Kerala's inland towns.

The town has a long history as a regional and military centre, and today it is the administrative seat of one of Kerala's most populous districts. Many families here have members working in the Gulf states. Because of that, a map of the town often travels a long way from home.

01

Kadalundi River

The river winds through the town in gentle curves. It is the clearest natural line on the map and runs through the heart of the composition.

02

Kottakkunnu hill

This hill near the town centre is now a public park. On the map, the roads curving around it show the hilly terrain.

03

Winding roads

The roads follow valleys and ridges rather than a grid. They create a loose, flowing network that is unmistakably Keralan.

Why Malappuram

A map that means something

Many people from Malappuram live and work abroad, especially in the Gulf, and a map of their home town is a meaningful thing to hang in a flat far away. It shows the hills and river they know.

You can personalise the title with a family or house name, add a date in the subtitle and edit the coordinates line. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Paper gives the green hills a soft feel.
