The map

About this Manouba map poster

Manouba lies just west of Tunis and serves as the capital of the governorate of the same name. From above, it marks the transition between the dense urban area of Greater Tunis and the agricultural land that spreads west towards the Medjerda valley. The street pattern is mixed, with older, irregular lanes near the historic centre and more regular residential neighbourhoods around them.

Main roads and rail lines cross the town on their way into and out of the capital, forming strong lines on the map. On the edges, orchards and fields still come close to the houses, and the built-up area thins out into gardens and farmland.

Manouba was historically a place of retreat for the Husainid beys and the Tunis elite, who built palaces and summer residences among its gardens, some of which still stand. Today it is also known for the University of Manouba. A Manouba map poster captures a town suspended between city and countryside, with a clear edge where one gives way to the other.

Historic centre

Older, irregular lanes around the centre recall the town's past as a garden retreat for the Tunisian elite, dense and winding on the map.

02

Road and rail links

Main routes and railway lines cut through the town towards Tunis, forming long strong lines across the composition.

03

Edge of the plain

Fields and orchards on the western side make a clear boundary between the town and the agricultural land beyond it.
