A regular grid
Straight streets crossing at right angles divide Maqanshy into even blocks. This planned pattern stands out clearly when the map is reduced to black and white.

The map
Maqanshy lies in the Abai Region of eastern Kazakhstan, in the open country between the Tarbagatai area and the border with China. The landscape around it is broad and sparsely settled, and on a map the town shows up as a compact, clearly bounded grid with very little development beyond its edges.
Like many Kazakh district centres, Maqanshy has a largely regular layout. Parallel streets divide the town into rectangular blocks, and a few main roads lead out toward neighbouring villages and regional routes. The empty space around the grid is as much a part of its map as the streets.
A Maqanshy map poster is a study in scale. The neat pattern of blocks sits in a large blank field, which makes the town feel both precise and remote. Minimalist black and white suits this kind of place, where a handful of lines is enough to convey the whole settlement and its position in the steppe.
Straight streets crossing at right angles divide Maqanshy into even blocks. This planned pattern stands out clearly when the map is reduced to black and white.
Beyond the last streets the map is almost empty, which reflects the sparsely populated steppe that surrounds the town on every side.
A few long roads run away from the grid toward other settlements in the region, the only lines connecting the town to the wider landscape.
