Mata Grande lies in the western sertão of Alagoas, in northeastern Brazil, close to the borders with Pernambuco. The municipality occupies higher ground than much of the state, and on a map the town centre forms a compact cluster of streets around its main square and church, with rural roads winding outward across the hills.
The sertão is a semi-arid region, and its landscape of dry scrubland, seasonal streams and scattered farms shapes the way the area looks from above.
