The map
Mātābhānga lies in Cooch Behar district in the far north of West Bengal, on the flat plains below the Himalayan foothills. From above, the town is a dense cluster of lanes and small blocks around its market and administrative centre. Paddy fields, ponds and village clusters surround it, crossed by rivers that come down from the north.
The town is the headquarters of Mātābhānga subdivision and serves a largely agricultural area. Jute, rice and tobacco have long been grown on the fertile land around it. Cooch Behar was once the seat of a princely state, and this region has its own distinct history and culture within Bengal.
A Mātābhānga map poster combines a compact urban core with a softer landscape around it. Winding river channels and scattered ponds break up the straight lines of roads and field boundaries. In black and white the print has a natural, slightly hand-drawn feel, which suits a place so shaped by water and cultivation.

Rivers fed by the Himalayan foothills curve across the plain near the town. Their channels bring flowing lines into the composition.
Around the town, small ponds and field boundaries make a fine, scattered pattern. It shows how intensively the surrounding land is farmed and lived on.

Why Mātābhānga
For people from Mātābhānga now living in Kolkata, elsewhere in India or abroad, a map of the town is a quiet reminder of home: the market lanes, the river crossings, the fields at the edge of town. It also works as an understated piece of wall art.
Write your own title and subtitle, perhaps in memory of a family house or a special year, and adjust the coordinates line. Then choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. HD files cost $9 and come in six print sizes.
