The map
Media Luna lies in the western part of Granma Province, on the low plain near the Gulf of Guacanayabo in eastern Cuba. From above, the town is a compact grid of blocks with a central square, surrounded by open agricultural land. The flatness of the terrain means the streets run straight and even, and the edge between town and fields is clean and clearly drawn.
Like many towns in this part of Cuba, Media Luna grew up around sugar production, and the rhythm of cane cultivation has long shaped local life. Roads and rail lines once connected the fields to the mill, and some of these lines are still visible in the landscape. A Media Luna map poster shows a town at the centre of a working agricultural plain.
Media Luna is best known as the birthplace of Celia Sánchez, who was born here in 1920 and became a central figure of the Cuban Revolution. The house where she was born is now a museum. Knowing this gives the small grid of streets a significance far beyond its size.

Farmland surrounds the town on the flat plain, creating open space on all sides and emphasising the neat edge of the built-up area.
The Gulf of Guacanayabo lies to the west, and the land slopes gently toward its low, marshy shore across the coastal plain.
