About this Mediaş map poster
Mediaş lies in the valley of the Târnava Mare in central Transylvania, where the river winds across a broad floodplain between low hills. The old town is a tight, rounded cluster of streets that grew inside medieval walls. The main square opens at its centre, and the fortified church precinct sits just above it. Newer housing and industry spread along the valley floor in both directions.
The town was one of the main Transylvanian Saxon settlements, and the Church of Saint Margaret, with its fortified enclosure and leaning Trumpeters' Tower, is still its best-known landmark. In the twentieth century Mediaş became a centre of Romania's natural gas industry, and that industrial role shaped the districts along the river and the railway.
