The map

About this Medjez el Bab map poster

Medjez el Bab lies in northern Tunisia on the Medjerda, the country's main river, about 60 kilometres west of Tunis. The river winds through a broad, fertile valley, and the town grew up at a crossing point. On the map, the Medjerda curves past the town's streets, and the main roads converge on the bridge.

The town's name refers to a ford, and the crossing has mattered for centuries. An old stone bridge dates from the seventeenth century, when the town was settled by Andalusian families. During the Second World War, heavy fighting took place around Medjez el Bab, and a Commonwealth war cemetery now lies just outside the town.

A Medjez el Bab map poster shows a place defined by its river. The meanders of the Medjerda, the bridge and the roads that meet there form the core, with farmland spreading across the valley beyond.

The Medjerda

Tunisia's main river loops through the valley beside the town. Its curving meanders give the map a strong, flowing line.

02

The river crossing

Roads from Tunis and the west converge at the bridge over the Medjerda. The crossing is the reason the town exists and remains the centre of its layout.

03

Valley farmland

Fields and orchards cover the broad valley floor around the town. Their boundaries add a fine, regular texture around the curves of the river.
