Old town core

The map
Mennzel Bou Zelfa lies on the Cap Bon peninsula in north-eastern Tunisia, in the Nabeul Governorate. On a map the town has a clear centre of tight, irregular streets, the kind of layout that grows slowly around a market and a mosque, with newer blocks set more regularly on its outer edges. Beyond them the pattern changes entirely, becoming a fine mesh of agricultural plots.
The town is best known for its citrus, and the orchards of the surrounding plain are part of what the map records. Narrow farm tracks divide the land into long parcels, and rural roads run out toward neighbouring towns of the peninsula. The contrast between the dense core and this geometric farmland is what gives the place its character from above.
A Mennzel Bou Zelfa map poster draws that relationship plainly: the compact town in the middle and the working landscape that surrounds and sustains it. Rendered in fine monochrome lines, the orchards read almost like woven texture, and the streets at the centre stand out as a darker, denser mark on the page.
The oldest part of town is a dense cluster of short, bending streets, drawn much more finely on the map than the straighter roads of the newer districts around it.
Mennzel Bou Zelfa is associated with the orange orchards of Cap Bon, and the land around the town appears as a regular grid of parcels and farm tracks.
Roads leave the town toward other Cap Bon towns and the coast, giving the composition several strong lines that radiate outward from the centre.
