The map

About this Mertoyudan map poster

Mertoyudan lies in Magelang Regency in Central Java, directly adjoining the city of Magelang to the south. The district sits on the Kedu Plain, a broad fertile basin enclosed by volcanoes including Merapi, Merbabu and Sumbing. From above, it reads as a meeting of two patterns: the main road corridor linking Magelang with Yogyakarta, and the rice fields and villages spread around it.

Housing and commerce have grown along the main roads, so the map shows long lines of dense development with fingers of greener land between them. Village clusters sit among irrigated paddies, connected by smaller lanes that rarely run straight. Rivers descending from the surrounding mountains cross the area in winding channels, adding strong natural lines to the composition.

The temple of Borobudur lies not far to the south, which is why many visitors pass through this part of the plain. A Mertoyudan map poster, though, is about everyday geography: the roads people drive daily, the neighbourhoods between fields, the pattern of a place that sits between city and countryside and belongs a little to each.

01

Main road corridor

The route between Magelang and Yogyakarta runs through the district, and dense building along it forms the strongest line on the map, a spine for the surrounding neighbourhoods.

02

Kedu Plain fields

Irrigated rice land fills the spaces between villages, drawn as open areas threaded with small lanes, a reminder of the plain's long agricultural fertility.

03

Volcanic rivers

Watercourses fed by the surrounding volcanoes cut across the district in winding valleys, breaking up the settlement pattern and giving the map its natural curves.
