About this Mexicali map poster
Mexicali, the capital of Baja California, sits directly on the border with the United States, facing its twin town of Calexico across the line. The land is almost perfectly flat, part of the low valley that continues north into California's Imperial Valley, and the city's streets form broad grids that change orientation from one district to the next.
Irrigation from the Colorado River turned the surrounding desert into farmland in the early twentieth century, and the canals and rectangular fields of the Mexicali Valley extend to the south and east. Chinese workers came to the region in large numbers in that period, and downtown still has a historic Chinese quarter known as La Chinesca, along with a strong tradition of Chinese-Mexican cooking.
