The map

About this Miranda map poster

Miranda occupies a place where the higher ground of Mato Grosso do Sul begins to give way to the wetlands of the Pantanal. The town is organised on a mostly regular street grid, with the Miranda river running along its edge in broad, looping curves and the lowland beyond marked by channels and seasonal water.

Two lines of infrastructure give the map its structure. The BR-262 highway passes through on its route between Campo Grande and Corumbá, and the old railway to Corumbá cuts through town as well. Together they form long straight strokes against the meanders of the river and the flat land around it.

Miranda is often described as a gateway to the southern Pantanal, and the region is also home to Terena communities with a long presence in the area. A Miranda map poster shows the meeting of a planned town and a wandering river on the edge of one of the world’s largest wetlands.

01

Miranda river

The river bends in wide loops along the town, and its meanders are among the most expressive shapes on the map, especially in lighter styles.

02

Town grid

The streets follow a regular pattern of rectangular blocks, a calm, ordered centre set against the irregular lines of the surrounding wetland.

03

Road and rail

The BR-262 and the railway toward Corumbá cross the landscape as long straight lines, linking Miranda with the rest of the state.
