Achkhoy-Martan lies in western Chechnya, southwest of Grozny, where the plain meets the first foothills of the Caucasus. The town is the centre of its district and is laid out along the Fortanga River, which flows north from the mountains. Streets run in long parallel lines roughly with the river, and cross streets link them at regular intervals.
From above, the plan is unusually orderly for a town of its size. Houses sit on long narrow plots with gardens, which spreads the town over a wide area and gives the map a fine, even texture. To the south the land rises toward wooded ridges, while to the north it opens into fields and roads leading to neighbouring settlements.
