Alsfeld lies in central Hesse, at the northern edge of the Vogelsberg, on the Schwalm River. On a map, the historic centre stands out as a compact, rounded shape. Narrow streets converge on the market square, and the outline traces the course of the old town wall. Newer districts spread outward in looser patterns, and the town ends in open, hilly farmland.
The old town is known for its half-timbered buildings, above all the town hall on the market square, built in the early sixteenth century. In 1975, Alsfeld was named a European model town for the preservation of historic monuments. The recognition reflects how complete its medieval centre remains.
