Assiut lies roughly midway between Cairo and Aswan, on the west bank of the Nile in Upper Egypt. As in much of the country, the map shows a sharp contrast between the river's green valley and the desert plateau on either side. The city fills a stretch of fertile land beside the water, with farmland, canals and villages spreading out beyond its edges.
The Nile is the dominant line on the sheet, broad and gently curving, with islands and sandbanks in places. The Assiut Barrage, completed in 1902, crosses the river near the city and regulates water for the Ibrahimiya Canal, one of the longest irrigation canals in Egypt. Inside the city, dense older streets mix with wider avenues and the open grounds of Assiut University.
Assiut has long been one of the main cities of Upper Egypt and a centre for its Coptic Christian community, with monasteries in the surrounding hills. Assiut University, founded in 1957, is among the largest in the south of the country. The early twentieth-century barrage crosses the Nile near the city, a thin straight line over the water that marks a key point in Egypt's irrigation system.
Canals and fields
Irrigation channels, including the start of the Ibrahimiya Canal, run through the surrounding farmland, dividing it into a fine pattern of narrow strips.
