Bad Oeynhausen lies in the Minden-Lübbecke district of North Rhine-Westphalia, on the low ground where the Werre joins the Weser. On a map the town is organised around its spa quarter. A large, symmetrical Kurpark with straight avenues and planted axes sits near the centre, and older streets and newer residential areas spread outward from it toward the two rivers and the farmland beyond.
The town owes its existence to brine. Nineteenth-century drilling for salt found warm, mineral-rich springs, and the spa that grew up around them was named after Carl von Oeynhausen, the Prussian mining official who led the work. For years the town was also known for heavy through traffic, until a northern motorway bypass opened in 2018 and took the A30 out of the centre.

Werre meets Weser
The smaller Werre winds in to join the broad Weser. The confluence gives the composition a natural edge, where the built-up area gives way to river meadows.
Northern bypass
The newer motorway route carries the A30 around the town in a long arc. It is a clean, modern line that contrasts with the older streets inside it.
