Bama lies in Borno State in northeastern Nigeria, southeast of Maiduguri, on the flat plains that stretch toward the Lake Chad basin. From above, the town forms a compact cluster of streets and compounds on open ground, with roads leading out toward Maiduguri and toward the Cameroon border.
