Barbuda lies north of Antigua, a short flight or ferry ride away. From above it is a low, flat island of limestone and coral, with very little high ground anywhere. Its most distinctive feature is Codrington Lagoon, a broad body of shallow water along the west side, separated from the sea by a long, narrow strip of sand. Reefs lie offshore along much of the coast.
Codrington, the island's only village, sits on the eastern shore of the lagoon, with a small network of streets and an airstrip nearby. Beyond it the island is mostly open scrubland. A few tracks cross it to beaches and to caves in the higher ground on the east side, known as the Highlands. The shoreline is long, sandy and mostly undeveloped.
The lagoon is home to a large frigate bird colony, one of the biggest in the Caribbean, and the beaches along the west and south are known for their pale pink sand. In 2017 Hurricane Irma caused severe damage across the island. A Barbuda map poster shows a place defined by its lagoon, its beaches and wide open land rather than by streets.

The island's only settlement sits on the lagoon's eastern edge. Its small grid of streets is the main cluster of detail on an otherwise open island.
