Berkel en Rodenrijs Map Poster & Print
Berkel en Rodenrijs belongs to the municipality of Lansingerland, in the band of South Holland between Rotterdam, Zoetermeer and The Hague. From above the town is a clear example of Dutch polder planning: straight roads and waterways, neighbourhoods laid out in regular blocks, and drainage ditches running in parallel lines through the surrounding land.
The old village grew along a ribbon of road, and much of the modern town was built in recent decades as the Randstad expanded. The RandstadRail light-rail line runs through it on its way from Rotterdam toward The Hague, with a station at Rodenrijs. Greenhouses, a mainstay of the region, form large rectangular blocks around the edges of the built-up area.
A Berkel en Rodenrijs map poster turns that planning into a graphic composition. The geometry of polders, water and new districts creates patterns that are orderly but never monotonous, with curving residential streets set against the straight lines of the landscape. It is a very Dutch map, and a handsome one.
