Bethesda lies just beyond the northwest corner of Washington, D.C., in Montgomery County, Maryland. On a map, Wisconsin Avenue and Old Georgetown Road form its spine, meeting in a dense downtown of short blocks before spreading into curving residential streets. The town is unincorporated, yet it has a strong identity, shaped in large part by two major institutions: the campus of the National Institutes of Health and the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, which face each other across Wisconsin Avenue.
