Bethlehem sits in the eastern Free State, where open grassland starts to rise toward the Maloti foothills. On a map the town is a compact grid of residential blocks set beside a river valley. Around it, the farm roads that serve the district's fields spread outward, so the built-up centre reads as a dense knot inside a much looser web of lines.
The town was founded in the 1860s by Voortrekker settlers, who took the name from the biblical Bethlehem and called the river that runs through it the Jordan. That river gives the plan its most organic line. It bends through the town's edge and feeds the reservoirs that show up as smooth, pale shapes against the tight pattern of streets.
