Bloemhof lies in North West province on the northern bank of the Vaal River, which here forms the border with the Free State. The town is laid out in a straightforward grid, but the map is dominated by water. Just upstream, Bloemhof Dam holds back the Vaal to create a large reservoir whose arms reach across the flat Highveld.
The dam is one of the larger reservoirs in South Africa. It is popular for angling, and a nature reserve lies along its shores. Around the town, the land opens into wide farmland and grassland, crossed by long straight roads.
