Botoşani lies in the northeast of Romania, in the historical region of Moldavia, among low hills and farmland. On a map the old centre shows as a cluster of short, curving streets and small squares, the former merchant quarter. Around it the city spreads in broader blocks of later housing, with main roads leaving toward Suceava, Iaşi and the villages of the county.
The city is closely tied to Mihai Eminescu, Romania's national poet, who was born here in 1850 and spent his childhood in nearby Ipoteşti. The historian Nicolae Iorga was also born in Botoşani. The historic centre contains old churches, including Armenian ones, reflecting the traders who once shaped the town.
