Bronkhorstspruit lies in Gauteng, east of Pretoria, on the open grassland of the Highveld. Its centre is laid out as a simple grid of streets, typical of South African country towns, with residential suburbs and townships spreading around it. The N4 highway runs close by, linking the town to Pretoria in the west and Mpumalanga in the east.
The town takes its name from the Bronkhorstspruit stream, and the Bronkhorstspruit Dam lies to the south, one of the largest bodies of water on the map. The area has a notable past: an early battle of the First Boer War was fought nearby in December 1880. Today, the town is also known for the Nan Hua Temple, one of the largest Buddhist temples in Africa.
