Brookfield is a village west of Chicago, and its map is dominated by the regular grid found across the Chicago suburbs. Straight residential streets meet at right angles, with commercial strips along the main avenues. A commuter rail line crosses the village diagonally, with small business districts around its stations.
Salt Creek winds through the grid and adds curving lines to the regular pattern. Forest preserve land along the creek and near the Des Plaines River adds larger green gaps where the streets stop. Those areas give the map rest points and break up the steady rhythm of the blocks.
