Burton upon Trent lies in east Staffordshire, on a stretch of the River Trent that divides into several channels across broad, flat meadows. On a map, the town centre sits on the west bank, and its streets run parallel to the river. The Washlands, a wide band of green floodplain, separate the centre from the eastern side.
Burton became the brewing capital of England, helped by the mineral-rich water drawn from beneath the valley. Bass and other famous breweries made the town their home. Marmite was developed here as well, from brewers' yeast. Rail lines, maltings and brewery sites once covered much of the town, and some still shape its blocks.
