Cēsis Map Poster
Cēsis lies in Vidzeme, northeast of Riga, on high ground above the valley of the Gauja River. It is one of the oldest towns in Latvia. Its medieval centre keeps the curving lanes and irregular squares of a town that grew up around a castle, and later streets extend outward along the old roads.
The stone castle of the Livonian Order, begun in the thirteenth century, stands at the heart of the town beside its park and a later manor house known as the New Castle. Cēsis is also remembered for the 1919 battle fought nearby during the Latvian War of Independence, and it serves as a gateway to Gauja National Park.

The medieval centre keeps its irregular street pattern, with short lanes and small squares. It stands out clearly from the straighter streets of the later town.
Gauja valley
The Gauja River loops through a deep, wooded valley beside the town. It gives the map a sweeping natural curve and a sense of the national park beyond.
