College Station takes its name from its origin as a railway stop created for the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas, now Texas A&M University. On the map the campus is clearly the centre. Its quads, buildings, sports fields and research facilities cover a large share of the city's footprint, and the rest of the town has grown around it on flat to gently rolling prairie.
Streets spread out in a loose grid broken by curving suburban subdivisions. Major routes such as Texas Avenue and the Earl Rudder Freeway run roughly north to south.
