Covington lies in Northern Kentucky at the point where the Licking River meets the Ohio, directly across from downtown Cincinnati. From above, the older city is a dense grid pressed into the angle between the two rivers, with streets running north to the water and a rim of hills rising to the south. Floodwalls and a series of bridges trace the riverfront.
The Roebling Suspension Bridge, opened in 1866, crosses the Ohio from the foot of Covington's grid. Its engineer, John A. Roebling, went on to design the Brooklyn Bridge. Neighbourhoods such as MainStrasse Village keep rows of nineteenth-century brick houses and reflect the German immigrant heritage that shaped much of the city.

This 1866 bridge links Covington with Cincinnati across the Ohio. On the map it continues one of the city's main streets straight over the river.
MainStrasse Village
West of downtown, this historic neighbourhood keeps its closely built nineteenth-century blocks. Its narrow lots and small streets make a fine-grained pattern on the map.
