Crooked Island lies in the southern Bahamas. Together with Acklins Island and Long Cay, it forms a ring of land around the Bight of Acklins, a broad, shallow lagoon. On a map Crooked Island makes up the northern arc of that ring, and its long outer coast faces the ocean while its inner shore opens onto the pale shallows of the bight.
Settlements are small and scattered along a single main road that follows the coast. The Crooked Island Passage to the north has long served as a shipping route, and a historic lighthouse stands on Bird Rock off the northwest point. Much of the island is low scrub, salt ponds and sand, so water shapes dominate the map.
Some accounts suggest Columbus passed this way on his first voyage in 1492. The island is now known mostly for its quiet, its fishing and its birdlife. A Crooked Island map poster shows the curve of land wrapped around the lagoon, a shape that makes sense only once you see it from above.
