Crowborough stands in the High Weald of East Sussex, among the highest towns in the county, on a ridge that looks out over wooded valleys. The town grew largely in the Victorian period, when the railway and the reputation of its upland air drew new residents, and its plan reflects that: broad roads, large plots, and neighbourhoods scattered along the high ground.
To the west lies Ashdown Forest, the open heathland that inspired the Hundred Acre Wood of A. A. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh stories. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle spent the last decades of his life at Windlesham Manor in Crowborough, and a statue of the creator of Sherlock Holmes stands in the town.
