Currais Novos is in the Seridó region of Rio Grande do Norte, in the semi-arid interior of northeastern Brazil. The name means new corrals and points to the town's cattle-ranching origins. Seen from above, it is a tight cluster of streets in open, rocky country, with highways leading out across the scrub to neighbouring Seridó towns.
Mining is the town's best-known industry. The Brejuí mine nearby became one of the most important sources of scheelite, a tungsten ore, in South America, and for decades it shaped the local economy. The old mine grounds have since become a place for visitors. On a map, the industrial area appears as a separate knot of tracks and pits outside the urban core.
In the town itself, the older centre around the main church has short, slightly irregular blocks, and newer neighbourhoods fan out in more regular patterns. Small reservoirs and seasonal watercourses mark the surrounding land, and they matter a lot in a dry climate.
