Dārāb lies in the south-east of Fars Province in Iran, on a broad, fertile plain enclosed by mountain ranges. From above the modern town is a dense grid of streets with clear main axes, surrounded by orchards and fields that mark out the irrigated land. Beyond them the plain stretches to the foot of bare ridges, whose folded shapes frame the map.
The area has deep historical roots. A short distance from the town lie the remains of Darabgerd, an ancient city associated with the early Sasanian period, whose walls formed an almost perfect circle, one of the most striking round city plans of ancient Iran. Its outline is still visible from above as a ring in the landscape.
Nearby, a Sasanian rock relief is carved into a cliff face, and the Masjed-e Sangi is a mosque hollowed out of solid rock. Ridges rise at the plain's edges in folded bands, while orchards and fields fill the lowland between them in a patchwork of irrigated plots.
