From above, Desert Hot Springs sits on the gently tilted ground north of the Coachella Valley. The low Little San Bernardino Mountains rise behind it, and the valley floor opens out to the south. The streets follow a broad rectangular grid, but it never quite fills in. Whole blocks stay empty, so the lines on the map fade into scrubland and dry washes toward the edges.
The city is known for what lies underground. It sits above aquifers of naturally hot mineral water, as well as cold water prized for drinking, and many small spa hotels grew up around those springs. Branches of the San Andreas Fault system run close by, which is part of why the water rises so warm. Incorporated in 1963, the city is still young by Californian standards.

Long straight roads cross wide gaps, clusters of houses sit apart from each other, and the grid gives way to the loose, branching lines of washes coming down from the hills.
