Doetinchem is the largest town of the Achterhoek, the eastern corner of Gelderland near the German border. The Oude IJssel flows through it. On a map, the river's curves frame a compact centre of shopping streets and squares, and neighbourhoods spread out from there in every direction before giving way to fields, woods and scattered farms.
The old town was heavily damaged in the final months of the Second World War, and much of what stands today was rebuilt afterwards, so the centre mixes older street lines with postwar reconstruction. Across the Netherlands, Doetinchem is known as the home of football club De Graafschap, whose stadium, De Vijverberg, stands at the edge of town.
