Emmen lies in the southeast of Drenthe, near the German border. The town centre is compact, and larger residential districts from the second half of the twentieth century spread around it, with curving streets and generous green space. The Emmerdennen woods border the centre closely, which gives the map a large area of forest right next to the shops.
Scattered through the woods and heathland around Emmen are hunebedden, the megalithic dolmens built by Neolithic farmers some five thousand years ago. Drenthe has more of them than any other Dutch province, and several stand within easy reach of the town. To the east lies the landscape of the former peat colonies, cut through by long, dead-straight canals and roads.
