Exeter sits on a ridge above the River Exe in Devon, and the shape of the medieval city is still easy to read on the map. The line of the old city walls, much of which survives, encloses the historic centre, with the cathedral close at its heart and streets dropping down toward the river.
The Romans founded the city as Isca Dumnoniorum, and later centuries added the cathedral, the quay and the Exeter Ship Canal, begun in the 1560s and one of the oldest artificial waterways in England. Heavy bombing in 1942 destroyed part of the centre, which was rebuilt in the decades that followed.
