Falkensee lies just beyond the western edge of Berlin, next to Spandau, and it is the largest town in the Havelland district. The town was formed in 1923 from two villages, Falkenhagen and Seegefeld, and grew through the twentieth century as a place of houses and gardens for people working in the capital. That history is written clearly into its street plan.
From above, Falkensee is an unusually regular pattern of long, straight residential streets crossing each other at right angles, with individual plots filling almost every block. The Falkenhagener See, a small lake, sits close to the centre and breaks the grid with a soft, rounded shape. The railway to Berlin runs across the town, and its stations mark the old village cores.
