Fasā lies south-east of Shiraz in Fars Province, on a wide agricultural plain framed by the long parallel ridges of the Zagros. From above, the town forms a compact, roughly rounded mass. Wide avenues cross it, while a finer network of older lanes fills the spaces between. Around the edges, gardens, orchards and fields form a patchwork that surrounds the built-up area.
The area has been settled for a very long time. Close to the town is Tall-e Zahhak, a large ancient mound that has been linked to the old city of Pasa, from which the modern name is thought to come. Fasā today is a regional centre with its own university of medical sciences, and its newer districts have spread along the main roads.
