Fochville lies on the far West Rand, in the Merafong municipality near Carletonville, in a region built around deep-level gold mining. Founded after the First World War, it takes its name from the French commander Ferdinand Foch. On a map the original town is a compact, orderly grid set within wide open farmland and mine property.
Around that core the pattern changes. Kokosi, the township beside the town, has its own denser street layout, and roads lead out toward the mine shafts and processing sites that defined the local economy.
