Folkestone sits on the Kent coast at the narrowest part of the English Channel. From above, its shape follows the land: the grand terraces of the West End line the top of the cliff along the Leas, while the old town runs steeply down to a small harbour. To the east, the ground rises again toward the chalk of the Warren and the cliffs beyond.
The harbour arm pushes out into the sea as a long, curved line, one of the clearest features on the map. Behind it, the Old High Street and the Creative Quarter form a tight network of narrow streets, while the Victorian suburbs spread inland in wider, more regular blocks. The Channel Tunnel terminal lies just outside the town at Cheriton, a huge spread of tracks.
Folkestone was a fashionable Victorian resort and a busy cross-Channel port. More recently, it is known for its art triennial and restored harbour. A steep, narrow street runs from the town centre down to the harbour. The surrounding lanes form the densest, oldest part of the map.
