Frankenberg, often called Frankenberg (Eder) to distinguish it from other towns of the same name, lies in northern Hesse on a slope above the Eder river. Its best-known building is the half-timbered town hall, which dates from the early sixteenth century. With its cluster of pointed turrets, it is one of the most photographed buildings of its kind in Germany.
On a map, the old town sits on higher ground, with narrow, irregular streets that follow the hill. The river valley runs below it, carrying the railway and main roads. Newer districts spread along the valley and up the surrounding slopes, and the forested uplands of the region close the view on every side.
