Vitoria-Gasteiz is the seat of the Basque government, and its historic centre is one of the most recognisable shapes in Spain. The medieval town rises on a small hill in an elongated oval that locals call the almond, with parallel streets curving along its slopes and the Cathedral of Santa María at the top. On a Gasteiz / Vitoria map poster, those streets read as fine, nested lines.
South of the old town lies the Ensanche, a nineteenth-century extension with straighter streets and arcaded squares, including the neoclassical Plaza de España. Around the Plaza de la Virgen Blanca the two worlds meet: the curves of the medieval quarter above and the orderly blocks below, a transition that is easy to read from above.
The city was named European Green Capital in 2012, largely thanks to the Anillo Verde, a belt of parks, wetlands and woodland around the urban area.
