Gebiley sits on the upland plateau of western Somaliland, west of Hargeisa, on the road that leads towards the Ethiopian border. From above it looks like a town that grew along a route. Its main streets follow the road, and short side lanes branch into low-density housing, compounds and market areas.
The district around the town is known as one of the more agricultural parts of the region. Rain-fed fields of sorghum and maize surround it. On a map, that shows up as a patchwork of tracks and plots fanning out from the town, cut here and there by seasonal watercourses that stay dry for much of the year.
