Il-mappa
Gogland, known in Finnish as Suursaari, lies near the middle of the Gulf of Finland, far from both shores. It is long and narrow, running roughly north to south, with rocky hills covered in pine forest and a coast of boulders and small coves. Being high for a Baltic island, it has long served as a landmark and lighthouse site for ships crossing the gulf.
The island belonged to Finland until the Second World War and is now part of Russia. Two points of the Struve Geodetic Arc, a nineteenth-century chain of survey stations stretching from Norway to the Black Sea, are on Gogland and form part of its UNESCO World Heritage listing. In 1788 the nearby waters saw the Battle of Hogland between Russian and Swedish fleets.
A Gogland map poster emphasises form over detail. The island's elongated shape, its high rocky ground and the long reach of open water on every side make for a spare, balanced composition, with a few tracks as the only human lines. It will appeal to Baltic sailors, to people with Finnish family roots on the island, and to lovers of lighthouses.
Hills run along the island's length, giving Gogland a slender north-south outline that stands out sharply against the open gulf around it.
Survey stations of the Struve Geodetic Arc, a UNESCO World Heritage site, are located on the island, marking its place in the history of measuring the Earth.
Set far from both the Finnish and Estonian coasts, the island sits in wide open water, which gives the map generous, uncluttered margins.

Għaliex Gogland
Gogland is a map for Baltic sailors who have passed its lighthouses, for families with roots in Suursaari, and for anyone fascinated by the history of surveying. Its slim vertical form works well in tall frames and narrow spaces.
Rename the poster with your own title and subtitle, perhaps Suursaari or a year, and edit the coordinates line. The five styles, Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand, all suit the island, with Blueprint echoing its surveying past.
