Gorinchem, often called Gorkum, lies in the Dutch province of South Holland at the point where the Linge river flows into the broad Merwede. The map makes its defences unmistakable: the old town is enclosed by an almost complete ring of bastioned walls and a moat, forming a jagged, star-like outline between two rivers.
Inside the walls, streets follow the line of the Linge, which runs through the centre as a harbour. The town is known for the Martyrs of Gorkum, a group of clergy killed in 1572 whose story is remembered well beyond the Netherlands. Outside the fortifications, newer districts spread north and east across flat polder land.

The wide Merwede passes along the southern edge of the fortress. On the map it gives the composition a broad band of water and a strong horizontal base.

The Linge flows through the centre as a narrow harbour before joining the Merwede, dividing the old town and giving its streets their direction.
