Il-mappa
Gubakha is a town in Perm Krai, on the western slopes of the Middle Urals, spread along the valley of the Kosva River. Unlike a compact city, it is made up of several separate districts, each grown around a mine or factory. Roads connect them, following the river and bending around the hills. On the map this gives the town a scattered, island-like shape.
The town developed with the Kizel coal basin and still has a large coke and chemicals industry, whose works cover sizeable areas of the map. The land around the districts is thickly forested and steep in places. Mount Krestovaya, topped with a large cross, rises above the town and now hosts a ski area, one of the better known in the Perm region.
A Gubakha map poster captures this unusual layout. It shows pockets of Soviet-era apartment blocks and older wooden houses set into a green valley, stitched together by the river and a thin line of road and rail. In black and white, the gaps between districts become as expressive as the streets, showing how closely industry and terrain have shaped the town.
The river winds through the valley and ties Gubakha's separate districts together, forming the main curve around which the whole poster is composed.
Instead of one centre, the town is a chain of settlements that grew around mines and factories, each forming its own small cluster of streets.
The hill above town, marked by a large cross at its summit, now hosts ski slopes, and roads wind up towards it through the surrounding forest.
