Haidong Zhen lies on the eastern shore of Erhai Lake in Dali, Yunnan. The town name means roughly east of the lake, and the map makes that clear at once: a long, irregular shoreline on one side, rising hills on the other and a thin band of settlement between them. Roads follow the curve of the water, with small bays and headlands along the edge.
The eastern shore is drier and rockier than the western side of the lake, where Dali Old Town sits beneath the Cang Mountains. That difference shows on the map. Villages cluster on coves and small points of land, and the hills behind them leave little room for a grid, so streets bend and branch where the land allows.
